Multiple times in the last month, friends have mentioned that my skin looks very clear and healthy and my face seems to be “glowing”.
NO I AM NOT PREGNANT BECAUSE NO.
I am cleansing with oils and moisturizing with oils. I have been for about a year. No harsh chemicals, astringents, soaps or lotions. Lotion and soap is usually made from a combination of oil and water, and the presence of water causes bacteria to form and makes the oil go rancid. To prevent this, all lotions and most soaps must contain a preservative to keep them from going bad. That preservative is almost never natural, and something you don’t want on your sexy mug.
But oil, you say? Won’t oil cause my sensitive skin to break out and clog pores? No my dear one, it doesn’t. Oil is actually the best thing for skin. I know. Mind. Blown.
The Benefits of Oils:
1. Locks in moisture and help protect the skin against environmental effects.
2. Delivers a potent dose of nutrients.
3. Stops the overproduction of natural face oils by well-moisturizing your skin, avoiding that shiny t-zone look.
4. Are all natural, need no preservatives, and have a shelf life of about two years.
5. Easily absorbed & won’t clog pores
6. Ultra-healing and great for repairing skin.
Here is my daily plan.
Cleansing: I dab 2-3 drops of grapeseed oil on a cotton ball and gently remove my eye and face makeup. Then I wet a soft cloth with warm water and wipe away any residue.
Moisturizing: I apply 2-3 drops of a 40/60 blend of Tea Tree Oil and Grapeseed oil all over my face, including gently massaging around the eye. I let it soak in for a few minutes before applying makeup. If my face is feeling especially dry or sensitive, I will apply just Grapeseed oil.
Deep cleansing: Once a week, I wash my face with a homemade Tea Tree Oil cleanser (teaspoon of Tea Tree Oil in a bottle of Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Hydrating Cleanser). I like this Neutrogena product because it is fragrance-free, soap-free, dye-free, paraben-free, SLS-free, non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic. Essentially, it is a simple base cleanser.
And that is it. SRSLY. Why Tea Tree and Grapeseed?
Benefits of Tea Tree Oil for Face:
1. Contains components known to destroy bacteria and not your skin
2. Penetrates the blockage between your skin and sebaceous glands to disinfect pores and dry out whiteheads and blackheads
Benefits of Grapeseed Oil for Face: Tea Tree Oil (and any pure essential oil) should not be applied directly to the skin without a carrier oil. A carrier oil is a base oil used to dilute the essential oil – like grapeseed, jojoba or olive are great options. Mix your blend in a dark glass bottle and keep it in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight – otherwise it can go rancid. I like grapeseed for these reasons:
1. Rich in beta-carotene and fatty acids, and vitamins D, C and E – all important to cultivate healthy, plump skin by restoring collagen and fighting lines and wrinkles.
2. Non-comedogenic, which is just a fancy word for “it doesn’t clog pores”.
3. Locks in moisture.
4. Treat acne, tightens skin, helps diminish dark circles around the eyes.
5. Quickly penetrates skin due to its light and thin consistency.
Tip: Look for labels that say cold-pressed or CO2 extracted. Also, stay away from anything with words like “parfum” or “fragrance.” Anything else contains chemical additives, and not what you want to put on your face. At the same time, many of today’s oils are mixed with herbs and flowers for added benefits and scents. So long as they are natural, you’re good. Look for “certified organic.” My favorite brands of oils are Snow Lotus or Aura Cacia. Both can be found online, and Aura Cacia can usually be found at your local health store that carries oils.
