Me Likey Monday 3/27/17

Me Likey Monday is baaaaaaaaaaaack.

New here and all like, “What’s Me Likey Monday”?? Welp, it’s easy.

Me Likey Monday or MLM, the super clever acronym we came up with, is a roundup of what I’m eating, listening to, laughing at, sweating through and just plain lovin’ this week. Please please please share what you’re smiling about this week in the comments section.

Me Likey Monday | March 27, 2017

1. To the core: I’m in training for my first half marathon in two years, and I am supplementing full body strength with some low-impact TRX. The core exercise tabatas, like the ones below, are my favorite because they leave my abs and back feeling strong and stretched to support long runs. Okay, real talk: don’t mistake my “low impact” comment to mean easy. TRX is hard and dumb and I hate it … I’ll see you in class tomorrow.

2. A toast to sweet potatoes: My friend Nina changed my life during a recent Saturday run when she casually mentioned that she toasts slices of sweet potatoes in the toaster and slathers them with mashed avocado. WHAT HAVE I BEEN DOING WITH MY LIFE UNTIL NOW? Eating bread like a dumb dumb, that’s what. Apparently “sweet potato toast” is a thing that everyone knows about but me! And let me tell you friend, it’s delicious. I’ve eaten it with avocado, peanut butter and cinnamon, and plain with eggs on top. It’s a gluten-free option to bread that comes with killer benefits like beta-carotene, vitamin A, fiber and healthy fats! So here’s your PSA for the week: Don’t be a dumb dumb bread toaster. Try these sweet potato toast recipes.

3. These socks are the Bombas: Have you guys heard of Bombas? They are like Toms, but you put them on before you put on Toms. Make sense? Okay, two things: Bombas claim to be “the most comfortable socks in the history of feet” and I don’t disagree. Is it weird that the only time I don’t hate 5am is when I pull a pair of Bombas from my running sock basket? Yes I have a running sock basket. Also, for every pair of socks sold, Bombas donates a pair to someone in need. Because do you know what the #1 most requested clothing item is at homeless shelters? Socks. A basic need that I take for granted.

4. Born this Way: March 21 was World Down Syndrome Day which just so happens to be one of my favorite days of the year. When I was a teenager, I babysat for my neighbor Zach, a not-so-little 6 year old boy with Downs. Okay, he was like four times the size of me and always requested I give him a piggy back ride upstairs which just about killed me but was way worth his raspy giggle. I’d never met a funnier, kinder, more joyful and energetic heart than Zach’s. His sense of wonder and play slowed down my impatient teenage soul and taught me understanding, love and wisdom in a new way. A&E captured the sweetness of this day – go watch their show “Born This Way“!

5. Body like a french fry: Swimsuit shopping is my favorite! Yours too, right?! Yeah, no, I know. If you’re a girl it’s the worst. But whether you want to admit it or not, swimsuit season is nearly upon us. I wanted to love this Anthropologie swimsuit so bad. It fit me like a glove except for the fact that my torso is apparently 2 inches longer than a normal human a tater tot, and if I tried to do anything other than stand perfectly still with my hands at my sides my girls would pop out. And by girls I mean boobs. This ain’t that kinda party, folks. So, for my bite-sized friends out there, go get this Banded Scallop One-Piece suit from Anthropologie. Because polka dots and scallops and gorgeous and fun and soft and flattering.

6. Capable of doing beautiful things: Currently on rotation when I need to stay motivated and inspired during a workout is AWOLNATIONS’s Run (Beautiful Things). What is interesting is they have a second version with the lyrics, “I am a human being / Capable of doing terrible things.” And isn’t both so true? As humans, we are capable of doing terrible and beautiful things. Sometimes those things are separate actions, and sometimes it’s one action with different perspectives. Deep, amiright? Anyway, this song is DOPE.

7. Art is war: Dudes. Have you read The War of Art? Go. Do it. Now. My friend Graham suggested this read during one of our “cocktails and lamentation” sessions as I was unloading about all of the creative things I want to do in my life and all of the excuses I have for not doing them. Pressfield introduces the “resistance” – the internal foe that roadblocks our creative endeavors – and suggests achievable ways to overcome it. This book has gotten me (mostly) off the hamster wheel and I am working on my book, freelancing, POSTING ON THIS BLOG AGAIN and painting.  It’s legit.

8. She brought jokes: Q: What do you call a sleeping bull? A: A bull dozer. HA! You’re welcome.

Now your turn:

What do you put on your toast?

What book / podcast are you into right meow?
