What I’m eating, listening to, laughing at, sweating through and loving on this week’s Me
Likey Thankful Monday.
It’s Thanksgiving week, ya’ll! We’re gonna pumpkin spice thangs up a bit – instead of a list of a few things I “likey,” I’m gonna list a few things I’m thankful for. I know what you’re thinking … things I like are also things I’m thankful for. I hear you. It just … it just it feels different when I put THANKFUL in the title, okay? Can we keep moving?
1. Music: As I type these very words, I’m watching the American Music Awards. There are so many amazing collaborations this year. Kelly Clarkson and P!nk! Together! On stage! Singing REM’s Everybody Hurts!! My heart just liquified. Imagine Dragons and Khalid! And P!nk again! Literally performing on the SIDE OF A FRIGGIN BUILDING! Music is so special to me because it makes me FEEL. When I need to move on, I put on Kelly Clarkson’s Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You). To remember where I’ve been and where God is taking me, there’s Beautiful Things. Eminem’s ‘Til I Collapse makes me run one more mile, lift one more set, get up one more time when I’m knocked down. P!nk’s Raise Your Glass is my party anthem. 18 Wheeler, If I Had a Million Dollars and Boys in Da Hood remind me of precious times and precious people. Carol of the Bells spikes my blood pressure because Home Alone. The Lone Bellow can make me dance and cry. Elvis, Paul Simon, Otis Redding, Jim Brickman, Brandi Carlile, Beck. Music, and lyrics, speak to my heart and speak for my heart. And I am so thankful for the amazing artists that share their talents with us.
2. Adoption: November is National Adoption Month, and the BEST month of the year. Because of adoption, these little nugs are in my life! Booka teaches me that animals are amazingly designed gifts from God and that I can, in fact, love a Cubs fan. Lil Lil reminds me that life is to be lived fearlessly and that pink cowboy boots are appropriate for every occasion. And Big Sis and Bro-in-Law show me every day that family is built from love and faith, not genetics. I’m the luckiest lucky Aunt Meg, don’t you think?
3. My body: My body can do amazing things. It moves me up hills and down paths and across finish lines in the way-too-early morning. It carries five grocery bags on each arm. It climbs ladders, lifts heavy flower pots, pushes a lawn mower and paints walls. My arms hold the babies of dear friends and hug my CASA kids. My hands drive boats and take fish off hooks. My abs lift suitcases into overhead bins. My legs jump on trampolines. My eyes see art and my ears hear the Cardinal’s song. My mind solves problems, tells jokes and remembers birthdays. My heart prompts me to be compassionate and hospitable, and carries burdens when they’re too heavy for others. My mouth worships my God and eats all the chips and queso. It may be squishy or bumpy in places I’d rather it not be, but this body is mine. It won’t be this capable or perky(ish) forever, but I’m thankful for it still.
4. Hair products: They say it’s healthier for your hair not to wash it every day. And I don’t. But not for that reason. I simply cannot be bothered to wash and dry that often. Full disclosure, I can’t remember the last time I washed my hair. Coulda been yesterday, coulda been a week ago. Who can say, really? Not me, thanks to the Bed Head Wave Artist and Batiste Dry Shampoo. These two gems let me continue to not be a morning person, and for that I am eternally grateful. For reals though – they aren’t even paying me to say this!
5. Flannel sheets: Because the air is cold and my bed is not.
6. Avocados: I’ve been eating the crap out of avocados this year. I didn’t think I liked them – they look weird, they’re mushy, they don’t really smell like anything and they have about a 7-minute window of ripeness in which to enjoy. But alas, they won me over with their flirtation of versatility. “Put me on toast!” “I make your smoothie look like ice cream!” “I’ll add zing and healthy fats to your eggs, brownies and tacos!” Oh, and did you know you can freeze avocados? True story. I’m thankful that avocados are so good for my body – they are filled with healthy fats and contain nearly 20 vitamins and minerals. Plus, some people call them alligator pears and that’s hilarious.
7. Memories: If you know me, you know that my home is filled with furniture, art and photos that tell the story of my family. When our mind can’t hold all of our memories, I am thankful for objects that help us remember. Lil Kathy has been going through old photos and I can’t stop won’t stop. For example, take a gander at this priceless relic. Why does that little boy have his shirt on backwards, you ask? Let me walk you through what’s happening: That little boy is me circa 7th grade. I am (obviously) doing my famous Steve Urkel Get Down impression sporting bangs I cut myself, Sally Jesse Raphael-replica glasses and fake front teeth because I ate asphalt off my bike trying to impress two total strangers. These shining moments. These are the moments you tell your grandkids about, amiright?
