Failure Doesn Evun Maddur With CrockPot Orange Mulled Wine

How was everyone’s Thanksgiving?! I feel like I am slow on the uptake with my Tofu-turkey Day wrap up but you know what?  Doesn evun maddur.

I will not subject you to a list of everything that I ate and drank on Thursday because that’s boring.  I will share with you MY contribution to the pilgrim par-tay – Mulled Wine!!!

Earlier this fall, Husband and I made the trek over to Octoberfest in Hermann, MO with our best buds Ryan and Will.  While we were wine tasting, the sommelier mentioned that a particular red wine we were having was perfect for mulling. “What is this mulling you speak of?” I asked.  She said that your warm the wine in a crock pot with the winery’s homemade special blend of spices, and it was only $9.99, blah blah.  I instantly said to Husband (out loud, which was probably rude but you know what? It doesn evun maddur.) “I am totally making this with spices I have at home for Thanksgiving.”

Then some drunk lady who knows Ryan’s boss started hitting on her, a rare midwestern tropical storm blew over our hummus, we sought shelter inside an antique store and bought a bowling ball named Butch.  True story.  Bro-in-Law, you better shine Liz because Butch is coming for Christmas!

While I was at my in-laws for the holiday, I had a major workout #FAIL.  As you know, I’m participating in #BestBodyBootcamp and had workouts on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  Thursday was no problem because my friend Jason and I ran the 26th Annual Scott County Family Y Turkey Trot 5 miler.  Jason is faster than me.  I wanted to race this run (yes, there is a difference) because the only other run I’ve raced is a Half Marathon last year. I wanted to truly push myself and leave nothing out on the course. It’s been awhile since I’ve done that.  Did I mention Jason is faster than me?  A comfortable pace that leaves me breathing hard is 9:30 / mile.  We ran 8:30.  We finished the last mile at 7:45.  I got 34th in my age group.  And almost threw up on the guy in the yellow shirt I was chasing.  It was awesome.

Friday and Saturday however, was another story. Friday’s workout called for supersets and Saturday was a cardio day. I didn’t bring weights.  My in-laws didn’t have weights.  I could have gotten creative and used milk jugs, soup cans or borrowed someone’s baby.  I didn’t.  I sat around.  I went to a movie. I shopped online for Booka and Lil Bean.  And I ate pie.  I felt so stir crazy and guilty.  We drove home on Sunday and I texted a friend to see if she wanted to run.  She couldn’t. So instead of heading out by myself, I opened a few boxes decorated the house for Christmas.  I made a promise that come Monday morning, I would hit it hard and not look back at last week. I would do those 9 minutes of burpees and 60 pushups if it killed me. Which I did and which it didn’t.

I learned a few things last week.  One: my goals are my responsibility.  I should have prepared better for the trip and not relied on someone else to have the tools I need.  Two: tomorrow is a new day to do my best.  I can’t change the fact that I didn’t get my workouts in.  I can only work harder moving forward.  End of story.

CrockPot Orange Mulled Wine

Serves 6-8, I would double next time!

INGREDIENTS:
2 bottles dry red wine (I used Trader Joe’s Charles Shaw Nouveau)
1 C freshly squeezed orange juice (3-4 oranges)
2 more oranges (one to float on top, and one for garnish wedges)
1/2 C white sugar
1/4 t allspice
1/4 t cinnamon
4 cinnamon sticks
4 whole cloves

DIRECTIONS:
1.  Pour wine into a 6 quart CrockPot / slow cooker.
2.  Pour in fresh squeezed orange juice. You can certainly use store-bought juice, but the pulp floating around is a cool characteristic of mulled wine.
3.  Stir in the sugar and add the ground spices. Float the cinnamon sticks and whole cloves on top.
4.  Slice one of the oranges in rings, and float the rings on top of wine.
5.  Cover and cook on high for 2 hours, or on low for 4. You want the wine to get as hot as a traditional hot beverage.
6.  Ladle into mugs, and serve with a fresh orange wedge.  When serving, leave the lid off and the cooker on “low.”
