Fight For Your Right to Big Gulp

If you’ve been watching or reading the news lately, you’ve probably heard that Disney and the City of New York are putting new policies in place to reduce, even eliminate junk food.  Disney for example, announced that it would no longer run “junk food ads” on radio stations, TV channels and websites that are intended for children.  Products must meet specific nutritional guidelines in order to advertise on Disney, with the goal of reducing the amount of “unhealthy” ads children are exposed to.  Disney says its guidelines are in line with federal standards to promote the consumption of fruits and veggies and reduce the intake of sodium, sugar and saturated fat.  The Mouse is the first major major media company to do something like this, and with the backing of the likes of Michelle Obama, or Michelle Obiceps as I like to call her, I figure that others will be close behind.

New York City proposed a ban on all sugar-sweetened drinks larger than 16 ounces at retailers, including restaurants, movie theaters and sports arenas.  This means no more 20 oz. bottles of soda or Big Gulps.  Mayor Blumberg’s reasoning behind the ban is to fight obesity “in a city that spends billions of dollars a year on weight-related health problems”.

Personally, I love what Blumberg and Disney are doing. In a country where 35% of adults and 17% of children under 19 are obese, it’s clear that we need some help.  You know I’m not shy about my feelings on childhood obesity – it’s inexcusable. In a culture that literally sinks its teeth into unhealthy marketing and advertising (um, I dunno – The McRib or Taco Bell Doritos taco, anyone?), we have every indulgence just a drive-thru away.  We have even created pills and surgeries that will “melt your fat away”, just so you can gain it all back.  Comapanies repackage their foods to say “low fat”, when all they’ve done is change the serving size.  If they market it, we’ll eat it.  Trust me, I’m in marketing.

Some industry leaders and restaurants are up in arms about the changes, notably Blumberg’s.  They fear that banning what we drink will lead to eliminating the right to eat a steak the size of our head, order a refillable large popcorn at the movies or inhale a double-double at In-N-Out Burger (Gasp!).  Again I say, “And the problem is….?”

The debate could go back and forth all day – but I want to know what you think.

Do you think it’s time that companies stepped in and fought the health fight alongside us instead of against us?  

What about at the state and governmental level? Is putting laws in place about what we eat going too far?

  1. I agree about the ‘youngens’..Can’t believe that Cola ad……as for young adults and adults…buzz..there is enough positive education out there that once a person is on their own they should know what is good/not so good for you…”Take charge of your life, no one else will”
