Raise Your Glass to Summertime Fruit


Hello Friends! It’s Friday – I dunno about you, but that makes me happy! It makes Lil Lil happy, too!  Isn’t my niece the cutest? The answer is yes, yes she is.

This was a long week!  I think this crazy 100+ degree heat is taking it all out of me!  So far this week has involved running 19 miles, 3 strength sessions, a long and hot evening at the Royals game and a few late nights watching Season 1 of Game of Thrones. I’m ready to throw in the towel!  Except that I can’t relax yet – my longest run EVER is tomorrow morning with17 miles. I have my new Fuel Belt Slice Insulated Palm Holder in the freezer ready to go and will fill it with gels, gum, chapstick and a rack of ribs. Just makin’ sure you’re paying attention…

I’m excited to try this new water bottle.  The one I used last week wasn’t insulated, and I’m pretty sure I lost three fingers to frostbite.  Wish me luck that this week I don’t melt into a hot pink puddle of spandex on the trail – it’s supposed to be 103*.

Like I said, it’s been a long week and was in a bit of an emotional funk yesterday until I got home from work.  Guess what was waiting for me in the mailbox?My freelance article in Hy-Vee Seasons!  I’ve been vague about it up to this point because I can never really talk about my freelance articles until they are published.  The magazine doesn’t hit the grocery stores or online until July 25, but I was pretty pumped to see the finished product a few days early! 4 pages of editorial is the largest (in terms of length) published work I’ve had so far, and is on a subject that I feel passionate about – the benefits of athletics on children and teens.  I had the honor of interviewing some incredible high school students and coaches, as well as a Kansas City Royals professional scout. Hip hip hooray!

Despite the cauldron-like temperatures, there are a few GREAT things going on right now.  Like amazing summertime fruit!

Last night I whipped up a super easy summer salad to go alongside my Black Bean Pizza. The salad was a yummy bowl of leafy greens, sliced watermelon, slivered almonds and crumbled feta, drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette.  It was light and refreshing, just what I needed after a sweaty session of Body Pump, where we worked our biceps to my favorite pump-me-up-I-can-kick-your-butt song by P!nk! She rocks my world.

And since my appetite is that of a blue whale these days, about 23 minutes after my dinner, I wanted a snack.  More summery fruit! Cherries, blackberries and a plum.  Mmmmhmmm.
